Biblioteca Centrala Universitara (BCU) este urmasa de drept a Fundatiei Universitare Carol I, inaugurata la 14 martie 1895. Pornita initial pe o orientare preponderent umanista, colectia Bibliotecii Centrale a cunoscut o dezvoltare a bazei de documente cuprinzind astazi numeroase colectii cu o alcatuire enciclopedica.

Vreme de 50 de ani, inaintea transformarii in Biblioteca Centrala Universitara (BCU) la 1948, 12 iulie, Fundatia Universitara a ajutat la formarea elitei intelectuale din Romania, indeosebi prin acordarea de subventii, premii de incurajare, burse si prin tiparirea de lucrari.

In cadrul Universitatii din Bucuresti, Biblioteca Centrala Universitara (BCU) este centrul coordonator al unei retele formata din 13 biblioteci de facultate ale caror colectii de documente sunt dedicate procesului didactic curent.

In decembrie 1989, devastatorul incendiu a dus la disparitia a peste 500.000 volume, numeroase ex-librisuri, harti vechi si aproape 3700 de manuscrise apartinand unor mari personalitati ale culturii romane intre care Eminescu, Maiorescu, Caragiale, Cosbuc, Blaga, M. Eliade. In perioada 1990 - 2001 Biblioteca Centrala Universitara si-a continuat activitatea publica in ansamblul de cladiri din Calea Plevnei nr. 59, timp un care, sub egida UNESCO, Sediul Bibliotecii Centrale Universitare (BCU) este reconstruit si extins iar biblioteca modernizata devenind prima mare biblioteca universitara din Romania care a introdus un sistem informatic integrat.
